wednesday 01.21.09

at rei hearing about snowshoeing. the presentation was packed. i guess madison is pretty outdoorsy, even in the winter. i was standing along the back wall trying to be discreet with my picture, but instead became that creepy girl against the back wall taking a picture. meh. you can see (kinda) some of the snowshoes used in the talk, and the employee giving the talk. now that i know all i need to know to buy my own pair, i just have get out there so i can make sure i like the sport.

tuesday 01.20.09

popping a snack to enjoy in front of the obama inauguration ball coverage. it was done in just enough time to hear all about the new designer who did the first lady's dress. important news on inauguration day, clearly. my food cabinet is directly above the microwave. i found a little friend in there a while back munching on my chocolate. i immediately went out and bought the containers on the right to keep my food away from any free-loaders.

monday 01.19.09

working at barriques. the manager of the middleton store, cait, sings around town. friday is her next performance. a few co-workers and i decided to make a barriques social out of it. i spent some time at work decorating the flyer to invite others to hang out at the wine tasting, then head over to see cait. i was enjoying some jamaican red bush tea while working on the flyer. since starting this job i have found a new appreciation for tea other than it's alleged health benefits. liz was enjoying an old favorite of mine: hazelnut mocha.

sunday 01.18.09

a non-productive sunday at home. walking through the kitchen. behold the aftermath of a weekend. looks like the house drank and ate pizza all weekend, which would probably be accurate.

saturday 01.17.09

heading out for a night on the town. turning off the light in my room for energy's sake. nick and i met erin & ryan, and others, at erin's apartment. the 'talking heads' (tribute band) was playing at the high noon, and the madison friends came out of the woodwork.

friday 01.16.09

at the princeton club post-workout. the workout room at the medical foundation was being painted, and therefore unusable. i hadn't been to the princeton club since biking season started in april or may. it's shocking how fast i picked up right where i left off. walk, stretch, jog, elliptical, job, walk, stretch. and repeat.

thursday 01.15.09

reading up in my room in my papasan chair. working on 'a million little pieces' by james frey. i clean my room up almost every night, and every day it looks like this. too much stuff, or too little space? little of column a, little of column b i bet. despite it's size, i like the shape of the room. it's not a box. it actually has shape. i like the angles on the ceilings, perfect for an iconic poster.

wednesday 01.14.09

facebooking aron. i was working on work, but taking frequent breaks. i can't help it; facebook preys on ADD kids. behind the computer you can see the art ryan bought for the house. it's an aardvark in a tree. AARDVARK IN A TREE. you can also see some of the white elephant gifts left at the house after the xmas bash. little advice - never host a party that includes a white elephant gift exchange if you don't want to end up with a bunch of crap nobody else wants.

tuesday 01.13.09

moseying down the stairwell in the house from my bedroom to the main level. another lazy evening at home. i worked out after work (see tennis shoes) and shoveled some of the driveway (see winter boots).

monday 01.12.09

liz and i close-up barriques every monday. we hustled for a smooth close; our first smooth close together. part two in the 'glitz and glam of being a barista' series. barriques sells wine by the glass and by the bottle in addition to coffee. if you could read liz's barriques shirt as she's getting ready to wipe down the counter you'd see it has a picture of a coffee mug, a bottle of wine, and a wedge of cheese and under it the shirt says 'you're going to die anyways'. health educator says no; barista says yes.

sunday 01.11.09

nick and ryan are all hot over the new bacon cheddar taco bell somethingoranother. ryan was itching for some dinner; nick wasn't having it. ryan had to used liza to torture 'uncle nick' into getting up and into the car to pick up a week (read: day) supply.

saturday 01.10.09

nick and ryan cleaned up the kitchen. wiped down the counters, lit the candle, and the whole nine yards. i cooked myself up a half bagel with fresh avocado in the toaster oven for a dinner-like meal. considering the rough day i had (watching 'i am sam' and 'hairspray' while lounging on the couch and being served pizza), it was probably best that i layed low at home for the rest of the evening.

friday 01.09.09

bryan and i went to visit steve and megan in elkhorn. we had a home-cooked family dinner. it all felt so adult-like; megan even shook me up a cosmo like my dad does. at least we still drink from brother's birthday mugs. let's cross the fingers that we never grow out of that. we sat around an caught up for most of the evening. steve was deep in thought at the dinner table listening about bridesmaids dresses (which are lovely), probably.

thursday 01.08.09

it was my first free night of the week. so i spent it sitting on the floor with liza. she managed to spend the better half of the night carrying the blue star around trying to find someone to play with her in the frigid backyard. so plan b was to sprawl on the floor. ryan and nick are behind me on the couch and big green chair, respectively. john stewart and/or stephen colbert are on the tv. i can't recall which. but it's really not important.

wednesday 01.07.09

i had my first pottery class of the year. there were five people, and there were three wheels. so we had to take turns. i admired the items left in the studio from previous sessions. erin had left some from the fall class her, jen, and i took. once i got on the wheel i realized it's quite possible i regressed past where i started a few months ago. it took me twice as long on the wheel as everyone else. and my pieces ended up more lopsided than before. my career is soaring, really.

tuesday 01.06.09

i went to reina and neil's to play bananagrams. think of scrabble, but faster, and each person has his/her own board. we made great words like 'urology' and 'gonzo' and 'qi' and 'faun' (jury's still out on that one). reina and neil were fast learners. i sacrificed the game for this picture; reina was the victor. reina and neil live close enough to me that i can walk. even in the winter. it's a very peaceful was of getting from a to b, even with the sidewalks covered in ice.

monday 01.05.09

i worked the coffee shop, barriques, 5-8. pouring coffee, serving scones, making food. and washing dishes, mopping floors, cleaning the espresso machine. all comes with the glitz and glam of being able to call yourself a barista. who knew? you can see my reflection in the machine. if you look closely you may notice my shirt says 'make coffee not war'. madison is littered with anti-war folks making your latte.
(for fellow baristas - the espresso shot pulled to the left of the device i'm cleaning was not served to a customer)

sunday 01.04.09

my preventive health and wellness program description is requiring a bit of weekend work. i set up my work laptop on the dining room table at home and worked on excel and word. i work best on paper, but in an effort to be more green (and due to lack of a printer), i worked electronically. there is something peaceful about working from home. perhaps it has something to do with the leftover holiday reindeer ears (ears? no, antlers) antlers within sight.

saturday 01.03.09

david and i grabbed some drinks at the weary traveler. i used to live a block from the place, but have only been there a handful of times. in some ways it reminds me of my favorite bar in la crosse - bodega. and makes me sad to realize i spent such little time there when i was so near. it was crowded; we were lucky to find seats at the bar. we had plans to see 'fear and loathing' at the majestic, and started out the night catching-up on the east side. i hadn't really realized how long it had been since i had seen him until i saw the fullness of his beard.

friday 01.02.09

i had a relaxing evening dinner at home by myself. i warmed up the gnocchi with vegetables and pesto sauce i made the other night. i added avocado to it. that quickly has become one of my favorite meals. i curled up under my favorite green down-filled blanket in the big green chair with dinner and the book 'choke'. i finished both at the same time.

thursday 01.01.09

i had a girl's night at jen's. it was just the two of us. shannon and erin were sick. but the two of us cooked like they were there. hummus, veggie pizza, pesto, brownies, and vino. jen's boyfriend, jason, started us a fire before he left. we weren't skilled enough to keep it going, but were still able to enjoy what was left. we listened to the allison krause and robert plante cd 2.5 times through as we chatted about christmas, new years, loves lost, awkward encounters, and small victories.

what is this?

i read an article about 12 artists who each took a picture at the same time for a year and a half and posted their pictures with captions online. i liked the idea of seeing 7:15pm from a dozen different perspectives, and liked the idea of seeing the same time look different everyday. i started at 7:30pm on 01.01.09 with my own project. here is a photo journey of 2009. starting in madison, wi and continuing on to...? i guess i'll find out.
