new years eve! playing a drinking game with shannon, fred, and todd. getting ready to head on over to steph & carson’s with nick, brendon, jay to meet erin (fisk!!) and stacy (sorry for inviting all my friends to your party, s&c). then heading off to the barrymore to see shoeless perform, and meet up with my emmy!! in town from nyc!! what a way to ring in 2010.

snow day, snow day! happy snow day!! madison, wi received a gift of 19 inches of snow tuesday night/wednesday morning. the city (and state) shut down. my office and coffee shop were closed. so, no work for this gal, or ryan, or fred, or shannon. so what did we do? we shoveled. and drank. nothing quite like hot apple bourbon cider and peppermint schnapps hot chocolate on a snow day. headed on over to the willy/atwood area to kara’s and play some circle of death with kara stacy and cody later in the eve. good day. thanks mother nature! snow days should be mandatory.

it’s gonna snow in madison. hard. work was already postponed for the next day until 10am. so what did we do at mckinley? we drank. ryan and i headed out to the grocery store before the snowfall started falling to pick up some warm drinks. playing euchre with ryan fred shannon in the living room. getting geared up for our hot apple bourbon cider fueled hike through quarry park later in the evening. by the way, if you were thinking of buying the rights to market and sell bourbon apple cider sno-cones, too bad. we already called dibs.

playing some cards. last day in europe. hanging out with ryan and a couple of G&Ts in the rome hostel bar. we’ve played a lot of cards this trip. but really the only game we know is golf. so we’re playing golf. i probably kept the four of diamonds, since judging from the discard pile, it looks to be pretty early in the game. and a four is good early in the game. the table was real sticky, not good for cards. ryan had to play his cards on top of his little journal.

having some price cookies or something. not really sure what they are, since it was all written in danish. but they tasted deliciously similar to e.l. fudge cookies. and they paired really well with the red wine jenny and i drank on the floor of the hostel in amsterdam while we played some ds (double solitaire).

london london! on the flight to london! the bro and i started our month-long journey through europe. leaving minneapolis tuesday afternoon and arriving early wednesday morning. our adventure begins in flight with cribbage and free wine.

concerts on the square. playing a little backgammon, drinking a little wine, listening to a little music with william. eating some dried cherries. jenny mailed them to me on my birthday from corvalis. she said they were good with wine, but even better with friends. i have been saving and taking good care of them.

shooting some pool with some great people. mike – in from chicago, jen and jacob – in from corvalis, ryan – my roommate, jay and kyle – mike’s friends and my neighbor apparently. the seven of us had some beers, played some games, grabbed some dinner, and headed out on the town for a night. a night that included all of the following & more: three dancing pink bunnies, lemon drops, andy dobbins and heather vogts, red aura, somersault competitions, photo hunt, skull bongs, and campfires until sunrise. another perfect perfect night.

the day the music died...

i walked over to reina (and neil)'s for chai and games. reina and neil discovered the going out of business sale at cub foods and stocked up for hibernation. reina gave me a tour of the overflowing kitchen. spices, pasta, candies, fake chicken. and especially excited about a starbucks double shot espresso drink in the fridge. we had oregon chai & soy milk (a chilled one for the hibernator, a warmed one for the walker) and le petit écolier cookies as we played backgammon. neil joined us for a never-ending game of scrabble.

working with ellen at barriques. her and i used to close every wednesday. ever since the winter break and the college students returning home to madison and their summer jobs at barriques, i haven't had wednesday shifts. it was nice to have another 5 hours with ellen again. she brought a coffee trivia game her sister got for her from the MOMA in nyc for christmas. we had some down time and spent some time quizzing each other, learning about the history of coffee. did you know the japanese take coffee baths? and that coffee shops doubled as court houses centuries ago? and that the best baristas come from scandinavia? yea, me neither.

i went to reina and neil's to play bananagrams. think of scrabble, but faster, and each person has his/her own board. we made great words like 'urology' and 'gonzo' and 'qi' and 'faun' (jury's still out on that one). reina and neil were fast learners. i sacrificed the game for this picture; reina was the victor. reina and neil live close enough to me that i can walk. even in the winter. it's a very peaceful was of getting from a to b, even with the sidewalks covered in ice.
