at the grocery store in rome with ryan, our roommates niki and bizy, and lachlan. picking up some pasta, pesto, veggies, and a baguette to cook up for dinner in the hostel kitchen. nothing, really, is as sweet in life as finding such excellent people (‘mates’) in europe to cook with and enjoy a good meal.

washing some grapes – that i bought at the market in the a.m. in genoa – in the hostel bathroom in rome. rome! train stopped a in rome a little after 6pm, got all checked in, and met our friendly grape-loving roommates niki and bizy. the rest of the eve was chatting and drinking with them and lachlan, who had found us from his hostel around the corner.

hanging out in the courtyard in the hostel in nice. with ryan and our belgian roommate sam. next to me is lachlan. polishing off some vino, beer, and pringles before heading to the store to pick up some groceries. our culinary expert friend sam offered to whip up a dinner to make the rest of the hostel drool in envy. i regretted eating all those pringles once the impossibly delicious dinner was served. our australian friend advised i do as he was doing and choose to ignore it. ok.

having some price cookies or something. not really sure what they are, since it was all written in danish. but they tasted deliciously similar to e.l. fudge cookies. and they paired really well with the red wine jenny and i drank on the floor of the hostel in amsterdam while we played some ds (double solitaire).

driving with reina. well, reina driving me i suppose. we cooked ourselves a vegetarian dinner from our combined cupboards and refrigerators: fresh zucchini and hummus, sweet corn, steamed kale with almonds and feta, and scallions with salt. not too shabby for not going to the grocery store. we drove for dessert, but it was (as always) worth the effort. we enjoyed our ice cream as we window shopped through greenway for a dress for reina.

ice cream with ryan. delicious delicious cold stone ice cream creations with ryan. after spending the rainy humid afternoon in the house with a broken computer and ‘one flew over the cuckoo’s nest’, i was feeling a bit (a lot) stir crazy and sweaty. luckily ryan was on the same page as we collided in the living room in a daze of boredom. cold stone was the ideal remedy. and we had gift cards.

cleaning up after my dinner. the friday morning starts at my primary care clinic for my cholesterol test at 7:15, so i have to be fasting for twelve hours prior. ugh. i contemplated a yoga class post-dinner, but opted to read in the backyard with my wine (oooo – that’s gonna make me fail my cholesterol test. damn!) for a bit then take my bike out for a quick spin in the remaining light. what am i going to do when i get back from europe and the sun goes into hiding before 8pm? i don’t know if i can take another winter of darkness and hibernation.

dinner at zach’s. he made lasagna (two! meat and vegetarian!), salad, and served crackers & cheese and fresh from new zealand pinot noir. delicious and delicious. got to hang out at his new place right downtown – which i am sure is even more awesome when not dealing with concerts on the square parking – and continue catching-up from his extended leave of absence from the states. and, i scored the entire pan of veggie lasagna to bring home. he is too good to me.

dinner with erin in atlanta. after an afternoon of exploring all the suburbs have to offer, we decided on a local ‘italian oven’ restaurant for our exciting first dinner in atlanta. what were we expecting? not really sure? but certainly not the perkins of italian joints – complete with checkerboard AND paper (with crayons!) tablecloths. we made sure to take full advantage of our special dinner by treating ourselves real nice. wine, fried food platter, bread & olive oil, salad, and two main dishes that easily could have each served four. the table, meant for four, was not big enough for our appetites. we could barely muster up enough energy to collapse on the hotel beds in front of ‘headliners & legends: michael jackson’. (we somehow managed.)

enjoying a sweet fruit salad (in my handmade bowl!) and wine in the backyard. working on the ‘to pack’ list for the big road trip to nashville, atlanta. brainstorming all the things i could ever possibly need for a four day or so trip. the fruit was delicious and sweet after sitting in the fridge in the sugary minty concoction i put together 24 hours prior. the wine, to my disappointment, was not-so-tasty. perhaps wine does not keep for three weeks after being opened - who knew?

cooking up some dinner. made myself a garden wrap for lunch at barriques work. it is as delicious as it is huge. so i only made it through half of the thing at work, leaving the rest for home. i took it out in the backyard with a glass of wine and did some europa internet research on the patio furniture for a bit.

mmm – snack time. apple snack time. a perfect braeburn apple snack always sounds nice. work managed to drag out well into the six o’clock hour. by the time the computer was shut down for the night i was in no mood to make a proper dinner. so it was the old stand-by – microwave popcorn and an apple. no complaints.

waiting for dinner. waiting (im)patiently for dinner. waiting (im)patiently for dinner for 90 minutes. i despise baked potatoes. i ate so many tostados chips during the cooking time that by the time it was ready, i wasn’t hungry anymore. i made a verbal note to nick to remind me in the future: waiting for baked potatoes makes me unhappy.

in napa! my ma and i met up in california for a memorial day weekend trip of wine tasting. we were greeted with open arms offering virtually bottomless glasses of wine. before checking in the hotel we stopped by a tasting room in downtown napa, only to be told of a street fair going on just two blocks up. we were interested. and what a perfect way to enter napa. we spent the evening wandering the street fair with our wine, checking out the farmers market, eating an italian dinner, and shopping the local main street.

nick discovered a hidden gem in madison – ‘china 1 buffet’. after staring at the flyer on our fridge, we made plans to check out what the buffet had to offer for dinner. and their pictures of sushi and fruit and pizza and beyond did not lead us astray. we each managed a few plates before retiring back to the house.

just eating a little ice cream – cookies & crème with chocolate syrup. i started out the day with my party pants, but slowly removed them leg by leg throughout the day. nick and i (and i guess liza) spent the evening in front of ‘happy go lucky’ and a pizza from pizza hut.

back from the weekend in la crosse. after a breakfast with the gals, and coffee with alli, i hit the road. made it back in decent time, considering the weather was less than agreeable. as much as i enjoy spring, i always forget how terrifying driving in rain can be. by the time i made it back i was a snack for myself - pesto and melted provolone on bread. and water. lots and lots of water.

cuddled up on the big green chair in my living room after an evening of yoga. i got back from class to see my first 'yoga' magazine came in the mail. popped a bag of popcorn, changed into the pjs, and settled in for a cover-to-cover read.

sitting at home with liza. watching '30 rock' online. i missed the episode from last week, along with 'the office'. so wednesday seemed like a good day to play catch-up. ordered some glass nickel pizza for myself (never mind the double recipe of asparagus risotto i made sunday or the soup i brought home from barriques) and settled in on the couch for the night.

at delmonicos downtown madison. with my boss at a presentation on cervical cancer and genital warts. you must be envious you didn't get into the preventive health field... it was truly an interesting presentation. the presentation focused in the human papillomavirus (hpv) and the vaccine that prevents much of hpv for women. i work with the vaccination for my job, but knew little about the clinical background information the OB/GYN preseted to the group. the photo is a bit blurry, not because i had too much wine, but because a) i was surrounded by doctors and felt self-conscious, and b) i was at a professional function; i should be paying attention. even with the blur, you can see it was a delicious dinner.
